Thailand 2000

thai dance
Complete Fast-Start Video

This away-from-home video contains:

A noodle breakfast(!), a tuk tuk ride, up to Ayuthaya, Khao Yai National Park and then waiting for a ferry at Ban Phe.

Next: Ko Samet island, Bangkok, the incredible Grand Palace, Lopburi (a monkey town) and Kanchanabury.

Finally: the unbelievable Erawan Nation Park, Kanchanaburi, Phra Pathom Chedi, Hua Hin and a delightful conclusion.

Notes

This was the first video I ever edited. As you can imagine there are many things I would do differently now. Still, we live and learn. And then we die.

The original was shot digital and looks very very nice. If you would like a DVD copy email me.

When I watch the DVD in all its glory, there are two things I love. All the music, except the Schools Out song at the start, is Thai. The countless hours I spent searching for the right music for the right moment cannot, strangely enough, be counted. Thai music has a wonderful gentleness to it. The second thing I love is Shoko (my girl friend, or, in the legal parlance, wife)! Those were happy times.

Some of the stuff in this video:

A day trip to Kamakura, a Shinjuku Festival, my first onsen visit , a shrine at New Year, Yoyogi Park on Sunday afternoon, Mount Zao Region and Matsushima Bay.

Notes

This video was haphazardly shot with an old analogue video camera during my first 12 months in Japan. From there it was haphazardly transferred to digital. From there it was haphazardly transferred to my computer. At that point I carefully edited the whole mess in Final Cut.

Complete Fast-Start HD Video

Another video offering a selective view of life in Japan. In this one, various nameless people potter about in various unknown places doing a variety of leisurely activities. You will see: a ramshackle onsen (hot spring), a would-be divorcee having an adventure, total relaxation Japanese style during cherry-blossom season, a delightful river scene, peaceful fishing, an ultra expensive cafe with no cappuccino machine, a log cabin type activity, a death defying swim, and seeking the meaning of life in silence. All this in less than eight minutes? Watch and see.

Notes

There are certain terrible times in life when some might turn to poetry, to writing sad songs, to alcohol or even to work. I seem to be editing old videos. Whether it's therapy or madness, only my psychiatrist can tell.

Notes

This vacation video will take you to: Chryssafa, near Sparta; mysterious Mystras; Kalamata; marvelous Monemvasia; Nafplio; Acadia; Olympia; Vikos-Aoos National Park; the Sithonia penisula; miraculous Meteora; Delphi and many other places.

This holiday video does not include: my daughter only picking a single bunch of grapes and then running away screaming in fear of wasps; me always swimming naked like some ancient hippy; every meal dripping with olive oil; lazy local bureaucrats and unchristian priests who prevented Yumée and Sota from getting married because the 100 pages of official documents they had from the Greek embassy in Montreal were insufficient and inadequate; my natural wit and modesty.

Golden Week 2002 23 minutes of golden memories

canada video
Complete Fast-Start Video

This video contains: typical tourist thing in Montreal and Quebec City as well as family and friends stuff. A lunatic drive up the north shore of the Saint Lawrence. A beach in New Brunswick. A tour of beautiful Prince Edward Island. And then back to Quebec with more friends and a question about zooming-in. All
in all, it's another of my holiday vids!

Notes

There are two problems with this video. First, as usual when I am on holiday, shooting video is always an afterthought, so the quality of the footage is bad and the quantity limited. This makes editing hard, since of course we want some kind of narrative sequence. Second, the little Canon camera was on its last legs here and lots of video exploded into pixels and could not be used. Still, it's worth a quick gander.

A video containing:
Goshiki Numa camping and a wild hike in the snow up Mount Bandai, a weird fishing platform, the lovely shrine at yudonosan, a nice though chilly hill top camp, Shoko's mystery birthday, a golden photo opportunity (or two) at towada-ko, the rustic (dilapidated) and charming nyuto onsen, tousiti onsen, a look at paradise Japanese style: jodogahama, and a waste of time in ojika peninsula. Oh, and a water slide finale.

lombok
Complete Fast-Start HD Video

An Indonesian video containing: a couple of days relaxing in Bali; and a couple of weeks enjoying the Holiday Resort Hotel near Sengigi and exploring the rest of Lombok.

This was the first time I used our new high definition camera on holiday. It's the Sony HDR-HC1.

I was in the early stages of a long convalescence and rather unstable on my feet. In fact, when I first went on the beach in Bali and looked at the waves I thought the whole world was turning upside down! Since HD video has a reputation for exaggerating camera-shake, this video can be considered an extreme test because of the very wobbly cameraman. Post or email me any questions/comments you may have.

Oh, and the usual caveats about not bothering to use the camera when when interesting things were happening (bridges washed away in floods, driving through rivers, pot-holes large enough to swallow the entire jeep (no exaggeration), dirt roads through the jungle that forced us to drive at 10km and hour and go on forever etc etc); and religiously using it when nothing interesting was going on.

Notes
I'm now divorced with the girl in this video. So it was a very strange and troubling experience trying to edit this. Stranger still is how happy memories have now become sad memories.
